What are dental crowns?

A dental crown or a dental cap is a medical device which completely caps or encircles a tooth. Crowns are normally used to restore a broken tooth crown, to fix a dental bridge or to cap a dental implant.

Role of a dental crown

The dental crown has, first of all, an aesthetic role, as it either replaces or completely covers the tooth/teeth, taking into account all the size, form or colour particularities of the adjacent teeth.

Once it is applied, the dental crown ensures or increases the resistance of the tooth it covers, preventing the displacement/movement of the adjacent teeth. Moreover, once the crown is cemented, the tooth can be used in the mastication process without any impediment.

Indications

Each treatment option will be explained to you by our specialist doctors who will present all related advantages and disadvantages. We recommend dental crowns in the following situations:

  • the tooth is badly broken down, worn or fractured
  • the dental arch needs restoration by means of dental bridging
  • your teeth have undergone root canal treatment (the nerve has been removed)

Contraindications

Our doctors do not recommend dental crowns in the following cases:

  • you have untreated cavities
  • you have an insufficient number of pillar-teeth for extended dental bridges
  • your teeth have undergone improper endodontic treatment
  • malocclusion or instable bite

Stages of a dental crown treatment

1.      Establishing the colour of the dental crown, according to the natural colour of the patient’s teeth;

2.      Tooth/teeth polishing in order to create the necessary space for the insertion of the dental crown;

3.      Fingerprinting the position of the dental implant or of the tooth;

4.      Fit of removable device: it protects the tooth/teeth and the gums until the definitive bridge or dental crown is fit;

5.      Fit of temporary restoration;

6.      Fit of definitive restoration.

Clarifications

  • the dental crowns treatment also involves laboratory stages (dental technology)
  • the duration may vary from one case to another between 10 and 20 days
  • there are rare cases in which the dental crown may display cracks or fractures; however, these can be easily fixed</li

How much does it cost?

The price of dental crowns varies according to the material used. In our clinics, our first choices in terms of materials are porcelain crowns on metal base,  and the all-porcelain crown (E-max).

The porcelain crown on zirconia base is our first recommendation for our patients, due to the ideal esthetics of the porcelain and the absolute biocompatibility of the zirconia, with a beneficial long-term effect upon the general state of health.
